In my humble opinion, there is no better savings account or health plan. It's a fantastic retirement tool as well. The HSA offers a triple tax advantaged savings program.
It's important to note, an HSA is not the health insurance plan. It is simply a tool that is allowed with a predetermined type of health insurance plan. If you do not have a health insurance plan, you simply can't contribute to the plan anymore. Tax penalties will occur if you're caught.
In addition, if you're turning 65 and enrolling in Medicare you must stop contributing if the account is in your name. Your spouse can open a new account and continue contributing. There are circumstances where you may not enroll in Medicare at 65 and continue to contribute. In this case, it's important to stop 6 months before you enroll in Medicare. Your Part A enrollment is retroactive for up to 6 months.
Triple Threat:
1. Reduces taxable income.
2. Money earned is tax free and you can invest in Stocks, Etf's, and Mutual Funds.
3. Money taken out for qualified health expenses is tax free.
Honorable Mentions:
1. Honorable mention, if you take money out for income after 65, you will simply be taxed in your income bracket.
2. Typically, the health premium for the insurance plan is lower cost even if you have a bad year medically. The math shows you likely will have less out of pocket in a good or bad year.
